In 1946, a civil war broke out in china between the communists
(CCP) and the Nationalists (KMT). The Communist Party was led my Mao Zedong and
the Nationalist party was led by Chiang Kai-shek. The outcome resulted in the
Communists defeating the Nationalists in 1949, and as a result the Communists
became the official founders of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing where
the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) was held. This
represented the new Communist government. While the Communists were in Beijing,
the Nationalists fled to Taiwan. Although the Communists won, many foreign
powers saw the government in Taiwan to be the “real” government of China. The war
in a sense was a beneficial situation for both sides.
